MONTEFIASCONE
From anywhere in the valley underneath, you only have to raise your look to see the hill where this wonderful town, a bulwark to the whole Etruria, rises. According to a legend, a cardinal named Giovanni Defuc, a wine enthusiast, was bound for Rome, where he was to elect pope Henry V.
On his way, he used to stop wherever he found good wine. He was preceded by a servant, who marked good wine-shops by the word "Est". As soon as he got to Montefiascone, he found such a good wine, that he marked the city gates by the words: Est! Est! Est! Defuc stopped at Montefiascone, where he died after a few pleasant years spent drinking his favourite moscatello wine.

Montefiascone is known for the great wine festival, held each year in August.

Interesting sights:

Church of S.Flaviano, built around the year 1000 and widened in Gothic style in the Thirteenth century. The monstrance-rest of Urban IV and XIII to XVI centuries frescoes are in the interior.

The Cathedral (Duomo), XVI century, was rebuilt after a great fire that burnt it in 1667. Among the most remarkable things, we cite the treasure of silver busts of Saints Margherita, Flaviano and Felicita, with their real skulls inside. The crypt underneath is also worth seeing.

The Rocca (Fortress) was built by order of pope Urban IV in the Thirteenth century.

20 LUGLIO S.MARGHERITA, processione con una cupola illuminata contenente la testa della santa trainata da buoi secondo l'antica tradizione.
1-15 AGOSTO FESTA DEL VINO, un calendario ricco di spettacoli musicali, teatrali, cortei storici ed un a infinità di sorprese.
24 AGOSTO SAGRA DELLA BRUSCHETTA, musica, balli, folclore e fiera dei prodotti artigianali lavorati con vimini.
